A Mastery Approach

What Mastery means?

 

Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. At Townville Infants, we endeavour to ensure our pupils are in the best possible position to achieve in mathematics and their knowledge has a secure base to build on.  

Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material. We use the NCETM ready to progress curriculum to support out children in maths. 

 

 

Variation helps Visualisation

  • As soon as the children enter nursery, we present children with concepts in a variety of different ways in order to help them visualise them:
    E.g. The number 2 can be represented in different ways:

Subitising

At Townville Infants we encourage the children to use subitising. This term was coined by the theorist Piaget and defined the ability to instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them.
